Some Very Colorful Abstracts, Happy Paint Party Friday!
The Evolution of 8 New ACEO cards.
Original 10x7 Watercolor Abstract. This painting no longer exists,
except as 8 new ACEOs. Chop Chop!

In watercolor class this week, we did abstracts. First we made line drawings of several objects, like a hammer, scissors, paint brush, etc. Then we drew lines across the page with a ruler, horizontally, diagonally, wherever. Next, I drew squiggly lines and circles and swirls where it felt right. Then we painted in the resulting spaces made by the crossing lines, very zentangle like, keeping in mind color combinations, lights and darks, compliments, and of course, leaving white spaces, which I did not. My teacher says my yellows are my whites. Oh, and I spattered a bit with Chinese White.
The original painting above was done on Hot Press 140# paper, 10x7 inches. I knew that I would be cutting it into ACEO size cards, so I did not think about a center of interest. After dividing it into 8 pieces, I worked on each one adding darker reds and blues. For the final touch, I dropped in some White Higgins Ink to make a contrasting design on the surface.
I will be mounting these with white mats and they will be for sale in my Ebay Store under "Abstracts" after July 1st. I think these would look great as a grouping of several pieces together. The frames could be plain black, or red, or whatever matches your decor. Since abstract art gives you an opportunity to see what you wish to see, I have given them tentative titles that express what I imagined, but they really can be turned in any direction, and given any interpretation that you find meaningful to you.
No. 1 Dots
(My daughter said this reminded her of Butterfly Wings)
No. 2 Fairies
No. 3 Feather
No. 4 Picasso
I used a straw to blow air into a blob of paint creating the splatters.
No. 5 Eyeball
No. 6 Spider Webs
(I used fine point pen to make webs)
No. 7 Jellyfish or Under the Sea
No. 8 Morning Glory
PLEASE, leave a comment and tell me what you would title these paintings. Which one (indicate No. 1-8) appeals to you most? Do you hate abstracts or love them? I used to hate them, now I like making them, so I guess my opinion has changed. Did you know that the number sign is now called a hashtag and Twitter followers use it all the time? So I have used No. to indicate NUMBER because that's the new # sign I guess.
FREE ART: I will be giving away one of these tiny paintings (your choice) MATTED and ready to frame, to a person (randomly selected) who leaves a comment on this blog post regarding Abstract Art by June 30. The winner will be announced on July 1, 2014. Then I will be listing the remaining 7 pieces for sale.

OK, I am first. These are wonderful. I like the larger shapes in the background than the small one on the original. I like No. 1 because I have found almost any painting is improved by putting circles or dots on it. I like No. 6 because the white shapes look like my spider lilies. Wish me luck in the contest!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Fran. These look great with a white mat. Good Luck!
DeleteI love how the white brightens it all up. I think the titles you gave them are perfect. My favorite is Picasso :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Denthe. If you turn them in a different direction, you see something different. Good Luck.
DeleteJust had a look at some of your paintings further down too. Oh you style is so vibrant and fun. Lovely to see an artist enjoying what they do. Thanks for dropping by.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Laura. I decided a long time ago, if I was not having fun, then I should do something else that I really did enjoy. Art is my joy right now. Good luck!
DeleteThanks, Laura, I do love color! Good Luck.
ReplyDeleteLovely! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Joy. I love your name.
DeleteAND THE WINNER IS. . .Spreading Joy Through Art. Congratulations.
DeleteAbstract art is captivating because it doesn't try to look like a defined subject, rather it's an art style that is intentionally non-representational. The subject or point of the painting is the colors used, the textures in the artwork, the materials used to create it. Your abstracts have an impact that strikes you from the moment you see it! Love your abstract art Penny Stewart! ~ Robin Jayne
ReplyDeleteThanks for the definition. I really don't know what I am doing, but don't tell anyone! Good Luck, Robin.
DeleteOh, wow! I am so impressed by these abstract pieces! I think abstract art is fascinating and I always see something new each time I study one. No. 8 appeals to me because the name of my blog is Morning Glory Card Studio. I appreciate you visiting my blog, which led me over to yours!! Thanks for the chance to win one of these beauties.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Joy. Good luck! It's almost time. One more week. This seems like it has been a long month.
DeleteAbstract art I agree is a wonderful journey. You are doing awesome with it. Beautiful colors. Excellent work.
ReplyDeleteColor excites me, sometimes too much. I don't know when to say "Enough" but that is sort of the story of my life. LOL. Good Luck!
DeleteWow, those look like a lot of fun and very addictive once you get going. Nicely done. I think abstracts are difficult and yours are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteAddictive is my middle name! I believe if it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing. But that has gotten me into trouble sometimes. Thanks! Good Luck, Marji.
DeleteThese miniature works of art are all marvelous, Penny. I believe my 2 favorite are the spider webs and the morning glory. By the way, my in-laws were in town last weekend and they both commented on the beautiful bowls piece I got from you. You are so talented. Blessings, my friend!
ReplyDeleteJust checking in and seeing who is in the mix for the drawing. HI, Arnoldo! Thanks for the compliments! It keeps me motivated to do more. Good Luck.
DeleteThey are all wonderful, my fave is the one with the fairies. I would call it 'Colourful dream' Valerie
ReplyDeleteFairies it is! If you win, that's the one you can have. Good Luck, Valerie-Jael.
DeleteOhhh these are wonderful. Since I am exploring abstract art all t his year I am very impressed with these. I love the spider web!!!!
ReplyDeleteNicole/Beadwright
Hi, Nicole, Well, explore away! I mostly don't think when I paint abstract. It is so freeing. Good Luck!
DeleteTheir titles are very successful with pituras, like "jellyfish" Saludos
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mari! Titles can be rather restrictive, and once you name them, they become something, which probably should not happen in Abstract Art, but I could not help myself. Good Luck.
DeleteI love number three, the feather. I am hopeless at naming things so I would ask my friend Mary to name it for me if I was lucky enough to win...doubtful as I never win anything! But just looking at your beautiful abstracts is a great treat.
ReplyDeleteThe Feather is a good name,if you like it. Simple is best. Good Luck!
DeleteI have always loved abstract art and have been exploring it a bit more myself. I love your miniatures and the titles you gave them. My favorite is no. 8 -it reminds me of blooming so I'd title it "Bursting Forth".
ReplyDeleteGreat Title, Linda. Glad you like them. Good luck!
DeleteThese are wonderful! Love the white splashes.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lynn. I am having fun with ink right now. I will add you to the list for the drawing. Good Luck!
