The People's Art Contest: February theme is Eggs

Attention artists!  New Art Contest - Open to ALL

ABOUT THIS CONTEST

The People's Art Contest (PAC) is a completely democratic art contest. The monthly theme is chosen by the people.  The prize amount and number of places paid depend on the number of people who enter, and those people are the judges
It's only $6 to enter, and you can enter any 2D work (painting or drawing, new or old, sold or available).  The participating artists are the people who vote.  Here are my entries for February:  The Theme is EGGS.  I decided to enter TWO of my food paintings to kick things off.

Day 26: Big Yellow Pepper

Day 26 of 30 paintings in 30 days
8x8 inch "Big Yellow Pepper"
Acrylic on Ampersand Panel

Only 4 more days to go and I will have accomplished another goal or painting challenge.  Since I am retired, it is not a matter of finding time to paint, but rather inspiration.  Choosing a theme has helped, although I have gotten a bit bored at times and painted something else.  I painted a pig for tomorrow's posting.  It's been awhile since I painted piggies!

Day 24: Garlic and Onions

Garlic and Onions was done for a class I taught a while ago in beginners acrylics.  It was a different style for me, sort of abstract, and we painted very quickly and in a very loose style.  I am using it for Day 24 of the 30 paintings in 30 days.  I think I am getting bored with painting food.  Maybe I should switch for the last few days of the month and go back to ACEO's for awhile.  I am back in my watercolor class starting this week and we are painting some really challenging street scenes.  Sometimes it is difficult switching back and forth from watercolor to acrylics and even oils this month which was a stretch.  So, here is Day 24:

Day 20: Appetizers, Crab Cakes

Day 20 of 30 paintings in 30 days, Jan 2014
"Appetizers: Crab Cakes with Dill Sauce"
6x6 Acrylic on Ampersand Flat Panel

More food. These were the appetizers served at the workshop dinner.  Crab cakes with dill sauce.  I love painting on these smooth panels we used for the class.  I usually paint on canvas boards, and these are so different.  Leslie recommended this surface for oils, but they are great for acrylics if you are trying to get lots of detail.  Ampersand Museum series panel, 1/8 inch thick with a premium acrylic gesso surface - no preparation needed.  Just paint away!

Day 19: Blueberry Muffin

Day 19 of 30 paintings in 30 days, Jan 2014
"Muffins"
8x10 Acrylic on Canvas Board

I took the reference photo for this one myself, with my Iphone camera, and even figured out how to get the picture into my computer.  I ate the blueberry muffin, but the other was either bran or chocolate chip, and I figured two would be over the muffin top, so to speak.  I have lots more photos of the wonderful food we ate at Leslie Saeta's workshop last week.  Can't wait to paint them.

Day 18: Canned Fruit in a Ball Jar

Day 18 of 30 paintings in 30 days.

"A Canning Jar with Crabapples"
Acrylic on Gessoed Board, 6x6 inches

Square Art, small fine art, 6 x 6 inches.  Acrylic on gessoed panel.  A Ball canning jar full of red fruit.  It could be tomatoes, cherries, baby beets, or what it reminds me of is crabapples from the tree over my sandbox in the backyard when I was a kid.  Mom canned those little gems every year.  Yummy! Half Way to 30 in 30, Food Paintings, PPF

Paint Party Friday:  Day 17 of 30 paintings in 30 days
Topic:  Food, or Culinary Delights
“Happy Birthday Cupcake #1”
Oil, 6” x 6” on canvas panel

I just finished an intense 3 day workshop using oil paints with a palette knife taught by Leslie Saeta in South Pasadena, CA.  Great fun, and I learned a lot, especially about marketing my art, pricing, selling on the internet and improving my web site.  Now all I have to do is implement the ideas starting today!

This cupcake is my very first oil painting ever.  It is not dry yet, and won't be for awhile.  That's one thing I don't like about oils.  My acrylics are dry by the time the day's painting session is over, not cured, but dry.  The palette knife technique we learned was really interesting but it does not work with acrylics very well at all.  The oils give me a headache and nausea, even the ones that are water based, so I am not sure how I will do any more oil painting, but I may try wearing a respirator.

See more of my 30 day paintings in 30 days here.
